However, I have loads of standard national floors and wanted an easy mod to get the benefits of UFE, without ditching them entirely
A brilliant idea. I’ve ( Stan) done that with all mine. People have asked how to do it here before. I’ll add the link to the stickies.

Been making UFE’s based on BMH’s videos for my polly hives (maisemore), and have been wondering if there was actually just some quick modification to change the existing floors. Might be a bit trickier doing it with poly floors but if anyone has a similar solution i’m all ears… i’ll have a play around with the modification for the wooden version with the poly floor

I reckon you could do it quite nicely with some thin perspex/polycarbonate. Same design but reduce thickness down to say 3mm.

I will have a play around :D

That would be amazing! I have many redundant floors now which I feel is a pity so being able to adapt them would be ideal. Look forward to seeing if you come up with a solution!

So, tried this with the poly hive today, will this work like an UFE or is there something glaringly obvious here that won’t work?

Well from the second picture I would think it will work - as a 'tunnel' entrance
I know it’s not actually under floor but just thought the principal was the same, in and up at an l shaped angle. i’ve now removed the landing board as well, i’ll try it out and see anyway. I just thought it couldn’t be that easy and knowing me i’d got something wrong!

The gap looks too large to me. It is really only 8mm?

Also, the wood doesn't seem to come up to the height of the entrance? So there would be no way for the gap to be reduced enough to have the same effect as a UFE? Isn't it more of a raised step that they have to cross, rather than a UFE?

These were some tunnel floor entrances CurlyGreenFingers made up. I think they are pretty much self explanatory.

These are very fine, but these aren't UFEs (which is what this thread is asking about) and they are nothing like what Mabee has made, given that his entrance goes the whole width of the hive, and isn't tunnel-like at all, having a "tunnel length" of zero millimetres?

It is an 8mm gap as shown here with the 8mm dowels, i’ve added a few more pics which will hopefully help show it better…. I have made some of the wooden UFEs but wanted to use some of my existing poly floors in a similar way if possible.

He had a temporary ban along with his oppo who when he was reinstated flounced off ( though I sometimes think he is still here). Neither are banned at the moment.
I now have an image in my head of a sturdy bloke in a beesuit, flouncing :laughing-smiley-014 :laughing-smiley-014:laughing-smiley-014
