Pure luck, my opening guess only required the correct initial which I got in next attempt. Then I realised how lucky I was as the number of possibles far exceeded the 4 chances remaining

With a choice of four boards you're almost always able to get at least one in 2 or 3 lines.

If you have a choice of letters that will fit, like on your first set, you can just move onto another set, which will eliminate some of the options for the first one.
