Not here, but over the pond they think you can so I think that's where the term started

Yes but the point is if you only want to prevent mould and are feeding at other times, such as for a nucleus, then a dash of vinegar is easier/cheaper.

Sarsons or wine vinegar?

Any vinegar (acetic acid) is good (and other acids e.g. formic, citric, oxalic....).
It's long been used for food preservation and mould prevention on kitchen surfaces.

There's a reason it's called "Pure Honey" ! there are several terms approved for describing honey, Trading Standards Institute Advice | Labelling of honey | London Borough of Bromley, I don't see the word "with thymol" in any of them, trading standards would get awfully upset!
Don't start me of the stupid description of " Raw honey "

Your question, to which I was responding, was 'Why use thymol when half or one teaspoonful of vinegar in 2 litres will stop any mould forming?' I just gave you the reasons why someone might choose to use thymol especially going into winter as we are/soon will be.
