Had one or two of these creeping about as if they training for SAS.

Hoverfly of some sort. Harmless.
 
Could be a Volucella sp. of Hover Fly which lives as a scavenger of bee and wasp nests feeding on dead or dying insects and other debris.
 
Yer they all look the same it could be a volucella‑inflata.
 
Been watching a couple of them. Sneaky like a cat.

They fly around then land on a flower, then hop to another one closer to the hive, then fly up to the entrance and hover around but not brave enough to try and land, but one did land on the front wall of the hive a couple of times.. then went home...

Was looking for Jeff Goldbloum.
 
Funny how I think of the bee as beautiful, perfectly formed and elegant.....I don't like the eyes on this one ( shudder :( )
