Hi all
I picked up a "nuc" yesterday. They are in a modified cardboard box with two large vent holes on either side. I have keep them in a dark shed overnight and had planned to tranfer them to proper nuc box today. I have been given them water squirts regularly. My question is the weather is very bad here today, wind, continual rain. Would it be ok to keep them in the cardboard box, in the shed for another night as weather tomorrow looks very favourable? thanks all

Please can anyone advise/reassure me that another night in shelter would be ok for them?

They will be fine, and just a bit of water nothing too heavy is required.

Just check the box for signs of perforation.

Phew! will keep checking box. Many thanks PH

you could swap them over in the shed, you dont have to take them outside to put them into there new home.

But yeah Like PH said just make sure they are not eating their way through the carboard box, should be ok for another night.

Transferring to a full broodbox would be better. Using a dummy/divider of course. Or was the word 'nuc' plcaed in inverted commas for a good reason?

thanks oliver90owner and jenkinsbrynmair. I just thought it was better for them, as the weather here (ireland) is sooo bad that a move from travel cardboard box to a nuc would be advisable ( less space to heat)etc . Yes but I agree it would be easier for me to do one transfer only, but might not be the best for them. Might it be expecting a bit too much from them? Would it? ps shed is too small to do the transfer inside!

Five frames and a dividing board in a brood box? What difference is this to a 5 frame nucleus hive?

None as far as I can see.

RAB

Burren, I'm watching the same weather. I believe it's to brighten up this evening. If it does, I'd go ahead and transfer, preferably into a full sized hive.

Place the frames to one side in the exact same order as in the cardboard box and if you have a dummy board put this against the last frame. If no dummy board, just use foundation.

In a week or so, add foundation to both sides.

I'd also give them 1.5 - 1 syrup for a couple of weeks.

bee-smillieThanks Huntsman666 and Oliver90owner, will do just that tomorrow. Weather report says sun tomorrow, thank the lord

most heat is lost through the roof, my veiw is if you want them warmer, put some polystyrene under the roof over the crown board

i use 4" kingspan roof insulation 460mm square
