Hello all,

Anyone supering in OSR areas? We have had a week of sunny days (still cold at night) and the OSR is beginning to flower.

Have you looked do they need it. No point in us guessing.

Yes couple strong colonies needed more space. Interested to know what others are doing

OSR in front of house has been in flower for over 3 weeks. Supered 2 hives but the cold weather has prevented them from gathering too much. Temperature not likely to improve much in next week, but a steady increase in activity at least is likely if the sun shines.

Yes - brood rapidly expanding and storing strongly in supers that has been on for a couple of weeks already - despite all the adverse prognostications here.

You are lucky to have any OSR, I went to Petworth Park yesterday and looked at the view north from the Ionic Rotunda. Normally at this time of year the view would be awash with yellow, this year ........ nothing. Very little OSR being sown in the northern half of West Sussex.

I've got some hives working into their second super and threatening to need a third, no point dilly dallying if the bees are fully occupying their box, the first nectar stored in supers almost invariably gets used up and replaced several times before they start genuinely ripening it to store at this time of year. This processing needs much more volume than the finished honey so staying ahead of them with space is a good thing provided you're not over zealous and give them far too much volume to occupy effectively.
