23rd August 2024 the BKA at Selby have suffered serious damage to their apiary in the town cemetery due to a large tree being blown down on top of it, crushing the framework and beehives. Currently SDC have closed access to the cemetery until the storm has passed and contractors have made the area safe.

My daughter has just been telling us about the problems they've been having at Leeds Festival. It sounds like it's been pretty rough up there.

Update - following the incident and many comments from the Selby community, a large number being sympathetic SDBKA held an inquest meeting to consider the best way forward. I understand factors taken into consideration were the popularity of the site but the ongoing problems of vandalism and series of complaints to the members and local council from a small but vociferous group of near (and some not so near) neighbours about bee poo on cars and washing. The association apiary bees got the blame despite at least 3 other known backyard beekeepers within a quarter of a mile. It was decided to relocate the apiary and clear the site. One of the members owned some land accessible but out of town and offered the use of a site. Donations would be used to replace destroyed hives and equipment. Hopefully spring will see recovery of the surviving colonies. I haven't seen the new apiary but hope to have a look when spring arrives.
