I am bit surprised that no one has drawn comparisons on the media with Spanish flu in 1918. As if the first world war hadn't wiped enough out. Killed millions worldwide. Or maybe I missed it!
E
Somewhere there is a story of a US town population c 1500 which survived unscathed..They basically refused entry to anyone. Anyone who wanted to stay was jailed for 14 days in quarantine.. Anyone who stopped there was jailed for 14 days in quarantine. They were charged board and lodging in quarantine...

Found it: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...own-that-dodged-the-1918-spanish-flu-pandemic

When you look at the Wikipedia entry about the producers of the documentary:

The Epoch Times is a multi-language newspaper.[2] It was founded in 2000 by John Tang and a group of Chinese Americans associated with the Falun Gong spiritual movement.[3] Though the newspaper is known for general interest topics with a focus on news about China and its human rights issues, it has become known for its support of U.S. President Donald Trump and favorable coverage of far-right politicians in Europe; a 2019 report showed it to be the second-largest funder of pro-Trump Facebook advertising after the Trump campaign.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] The newspaper is part of the Epoch Media Group, which also operates New Tang Dynasty Television (NTD).[7] The group's news sites and YouTube channels have spread conspiracy theories such as QAnon and anti-vaccination propaganda.[7][12][13]

You have to wonder a little...
Things like YouTube and other social media are great for spreading conspiracy theories. There is even one suggesting that Bill Gates is responsible with his vaccine development work. Talking of which, Gates reckons that a vaccine is 18 months away but that US economic activity could start to pick up end of May.

The internet really is a two edged sword. It's scary how non-factual information gets propagated, the lack of critical analysis and confirmation bias come together.

What people forget is that the Spanish flu (and most pandemics) come in three phases. Wave 1 ends, everyone is relieved, break out the champagne, celebrate and forget precautions...

Then the odd pockets of infection left infect the so far uninfected.. And Wave two starts - usually within less than six months of Wave 1 starting.. The second wave is usually the worst - still lots of uninfected.

Wave 3 is far less deadly - many of the population have been infected before and are now immune..

At least that is how Spanish flu ran in the US.

If Wave 2 happens in the UK - and it would be June-August - I will ensure we have toilet rolls:paparazzi:

Interestingly sample antigen and antibody testing in Gangelt in Germany by the University of Bonn suggests that 15% of the population have already been infected, i.e. a little under quarter of the way to developing herd immunity!

Difficult to extrapolate anything but it is notable that in a country with extensive testing and lockdown there is still a significant infected population.

That’s been reported for a few days but it throws up even more urgent questions. Why do we not have access to the same technology and how much have HMG spent on guaranteed payments to companies that produced the tests we have which are wildly inaccurate and therefore not in use?

Mind you.
I’ve just spotted this on my local Coronavirus FB page

My understanding is that the Germans had companies like Bosch already specialists in testing unlike ours and able to scale up faster.

plenty of capacity in UK for manufacturing antigens and antibodies if they are given cell lines and basis for growth and purification. However most contract manufacturing organisations will usually be fairly booked out making other life saving medicines. In house government capacity is limited

Public Health England seem to dislike/distrust and fail to co-operate with private companies, preferring to keep it all in house.

See testing where they are relying one one (soon to be three) automated centralised labs... The first was open end March and Sky reported it is conducting c 1,500 tests a day.
https://news.sky.com/story/coronavi...tre-only-conducting-1500-tests-a-day-11971991
Not great. But as a thought - I once did a global survey for a client who ran analytic labs for their customers. None of the labs used the same equipment or procedures, even for tests which were supposed to be the same. So the tests were not comparable, the results could not be correlated. So you can see some sense in trying to concentrate/centralise the testing. However, when the testing becomes the bottleneck, and is critical, then I guess you have to re-evaluate...

Really strange. Sometime in the last week (we quarantine all post for at least 48 hours at the moment) a copy of the Epoch Times was delivered through the door. Did that happen to anyone else?
