A good deterrent for squirrels is chilli powder, one sprinkling on some peanuts on a bird feeder 3 weeks ago and I havent seen one on it since.

I wouldn't have thought bees would have a problem with chilli powder?

We used to have lots of squirrel problems until I bought..

(on offer now: highly recommended)

5 squirrels later - all humanely killed - we had no more squirrel problems for 3 years.. starting to annoy again so out with the trap....

Today 23/2/12 nice a warm opened both of the hives with no life in either. Took photos of a cluster of bees that appear to be coated in white dust

Sounds like they managed to starve and the white powder coating is the fungus taking over as they start to decompose. Post your photograph if you will. I will lay odds on empty comb around them, although there may or may not be stores on other frames.
