It is same what hives you use on back yard. It maybe even top bar if you like.

If you migrate hives it gives many demands to the flexibility of hive volume handling.

World is full different kind of hive types. Langstroth seems to be the most popular.

One thing is odd to me and it is brood and half. that spoils much the flexibility of hive handling.
Another thing is jumbo frame. No need to it.

At least hive stuff is very expencive in UK.

Please can you explain in a little more detail, Finman? Were you refering to British Nationals or Langstroths, and why you say that.

The other alternative, which is bigger, is double brood. I don't particularly like double brood although I do operate a jumbo plus super at times, particularly the prolific ones in springtime.

The single box going through the winter has it's advantages in a small number of cases and doesn't require vast amounts of excess winter feed to fill the box(es).
