Is the native Irish black bee (AMM) any different t0 the Scotish AMM , Welsh AMM,or perhaps even the English AMM?
Strictly speaking the Native Irish Honey Bee Society (NIHBS) adds the specie name A. m. mellifera after the nick name "Native Irish Honey Bee" (or "Native Irish Black Bee"), much of their literature also makes reference to the Latin specie name as well. Some of their members online have said that they don't care whether their own bees originated in Holland or France, etc. as long as they are "pure" A.m.m.'s

However I personally feel that calling the A.m.m bees here in Ireland "Irish"or even "Native Irish" can unintentionally mislead new members, I was confused initially as well. I think it would be much better if a more accurate nick name was used, which I would imagine would be the "Native Northern European Dark Bee" (Dark, because they are dark, they're not black - recent research showed the darkest bees did not contain the most A.m.m. DNA ! that first place belonged to bees with orange spots!!).

Here's the Link,
https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s13592-020-00744-7.pdfI was surprised too!

Here's the quote to save you reading the Paper, but you really need to view the graph and the Supplemental Figures,
"A. m.mellifera colonies in which the BLK individuals were more introgressed than the B2T in-dividuals. A plausible explanation for this finding is C-lineage introgression originating from A. m. carnica, a non-yellow subspecies"

Thanks for the link , but I only got to the end of the first paragraph before I deciding it would be simpler to see how this thread pans out.

yes, research papers, especially the genetic esoteric type can have a mind numbing effect!

Thank you that is a really good point and one I should have thought of.
my Dream is to get some local bees, ideally Cornish Black bees so as you say I should ask them🙈

Is ther a consensus then that if Big ears or indeed me were to get an Irish black bee queen and requeen some hive made up with local mongrels we would end up with perfectly good amm bees and potentially improve the local gene pool of any black bee population?
