I think that fatshark's latest blog post, "Who's the Daddy?" is a thought provoking read:

The books appear to understate the number of drones that queens mate with (average from the experiment shown was 33), and there is a strange preference towards raising cells from the rarer lines in an emergency situation (ie queen removed).
