Just been listening to the radio. I see that in Kenya bee hives placed around the perimeter of farms have deterred elephants from entering and causing damage. I wondered why I'd not seen any on my allotement!

I've heard of this. There were big problems with elephants in crops. They put hives along the fences- not only keeps the efelants out, but the farmers get a new sideline. Win win!

Just goes to show - heffalumps are a great deal smarter than dogs, horses, heifers and, of course, brats.
Do you think an 'Elephants beware' sign would deter the brats?

In a word - NO.

We have the raised beds at the other side of the bee garden, we built for disabled use and for people waiting on a plot to be able to plant a little. There is one woman who allows her adventurous son to head down towards the hive. She knows it's there. Also, she told me he has taken great interest in the wasps nest nearby in the unused stupid tiny damp shed we were supplied with. I do worry that one day he will get hurt, but what can you do huh? I have put signs on the fencing surrounding the apiary corner....it's a fenced off corner of the garden, I have pics on here somewhere....so you can't just happen upon the hive. Nothing it seems will deter an adventurous child :banghead:

LOL....even that I doubt would deter the boy!

The 50,000 screaming bees might......oh no! Then I'll be in trouble!

Also the trouble with putting a warning sign up is that it can be seen as a sign of admittance of liability if something happens (well, I know it's the case with dogs (someone I know had a case where the dog owner was fined because his dog attacked an intruder and he had a dog warning sign up, thereby saying (in the eyes of the judge) that he had a dangerous dog!) and I'm pretty sure a canny lawyer could argue the same with bees)

Our sign just states that these bees have their own beekeepers, and if anyone wants to participate in inspections to contact myself at the the school. I'm glad I didn't add beware! now, lol

Do you think that would serve as a warning? Or an admittance of liability? The bees belong to the school. They'd have a job sueing me anyway, the only thing I have of any worth in the house is this laptop! It's not even my house, I rent lol

They could have the kids!! Heh heh ;)

any of them any good with a lawnmower or petrol chainsaw?:biggrinjester:

Sadly not.....they have very good irritating skills though! ;)

The little one is very knowledgeable about bees, could possibly be trained to do inspections when he grows a bit heh heh

That's pretty much ideal, you've made them aware they're there, so no chance of 'I didn't know what was in the strange box I broke in to look at!' ;)
