Hivemaker how much would you feed per single national brood box,1kg ?

.
In my hives they eate 500 g/week.

If patty is not palatable, it is smaller amount.

Last spring I tried Feedbee. The consuption was half.
If natural pollen content is under 20%, some hives do not like.

Pollen substitute or Pollen suppliment?

I remember when I first heard about bees being fed in the spring for the spring build up, I became a little confused (nothing has changed I am still confused) between substitute and supplement.

So for those of us who are a little confused here?s the answer;

Shelf life of pollen.
Fresh pollen 100% effective
1 year old 75% effective
2 years old 0% effective

With that knowledge we can during the season begin to remove small amounts at a time for our patties in the spring. Pollen should be kept in an air tight container until required.

So what is the difference between pollen substitutes and pollen supplements?

Ingredient Pollen substitute patties Pollen supplement patties
Fat free soya flour % 75 60
Brewer's yeast 25 20
Natural pollen % 0 20
totals by weight % 100 100
From; Beekeeping Study Notes by Yates
The first figure goes under substitute - the second figure goes under supplement.

As Finman has mentioned if the natural pollen % in the supplement is below 20% then the bees are liable to disregard it.
I normally make my patties to over one pound in weight, and check to see if more is required before the bees begin to bring in a good amount of pollen themselves.

For some reason unbeknown to me I can't produce a table of pollen %. Admin any comments please?

So does that mean by these figures that something that is taking the place of pollen,ie substitute, contains no pollen. And just a supplement can have 20% pollen.

My experience is that this amount of soya makes patty hard and it dryes up easily.

If you use fat free soya, it is good to add vegetable oil. Soya flour with fat is better than nonfat.

I use much dry yeast. It keeps patty soft.

Bees eate patty with their jaws. If flour is too coarse, the most of patty will be found on bottom board.

Hivemaker,
Pollen supplement is another food not collected by bees which is fortified with pollen.
A substitute contains NO pollen.
I add a jar ot two of honey to give the pollen pattie a soft texture and it remains soft during the time its in the brood chamber. (Which with honey in it is not long).

Thanks Bcrazy, would you add any vitimins to the soya flour and yeast, or just honey.

I have heard of beeks adding vitamins but in my opinion the honey will give them all the goodness that is required to build up the hypopharyngeal glands needed during growth.

Honey consist practically no vitamins.

I have read too that living yeast have viotamins but when I look facts, it does not have much.

I put multivitamin and C-vitamin into patty.

Hi Finman, how much vitimin would you put in per kg of yeast and soya pattie.

.
I have not seen any recommendations how much vitamin, but I have calculated:

How much adult human needs per day.
Patty is for 7 days

3 kg bees x 7 days is 20 kg bees in week

4-5 hives per week is equal one adult person mass per day. ROUGHLY, who knows?

I have dough machine with which I make 3 kg pollen patty. I put there one pill multivitamin crushed and 50 mg ascorbic acid powder.

Yes, bees have been alive.

Vitamins are in pollen and not in honey.

Does the yeast have to be dried,or will ready mixed brewers yeast be okay.

I have used both, but fresh yeast consist water really much.

I have got out of date dried bakery yeast from yeast factory.

If I wake up the yeast, it generates muchy more bad odor than yeast what I put directly into patty.

Breweries are ones which you may get dried yeast.

Thank you Finman. anyone who needs dried yeast, you can also get it from bako, around £20.00 for a ten kilo box.

That is a gentle price! Irradiated pollen is about ?12.

Now I use the mix 1 pollen : 2 dried yeast : 1 soya flour.

Sugar content 50% that patty does not make bubbles.

It woud be nice to use more soya but it makes patty hard and they do not eate patty to end.

If you use hp 100 dried milk substitute,do you use the same weight of this instead of soya flour?

So bcrazys recipe without pollen, is 3kg soya flour to 1 kg of dried yeast.
