Saw queen today first time in a while quite a few play cups uncharged in lower brood box along the upper part of a few frames. I presume this is because the queens in the upper brood box laying and lack of queens scent in lower? Also saw some brood niblbing their way out of their cells which was quite cool to see.

Tried pine cones in smoker today and boy do they throw out some smoke

perfectly normal nothing to do with lack of queen scent, if unswarmed these are the first place eggs will be layer for swarming. weekly inspections required.
