Hi everyone

There is a new national hive advertised on e bay, but the wood is pine. I know it will need treating with preserver.
I was wondering if there is a down side to having a pine hive?

Cheers

:cheers2:

it will be slightly heavier than cedar and wont last as long but the bees wont mind

Should be fine, but careful what you treat it with- a lot of things aren't bee-friendly. there was a thread on here a little while ago about it.

My pine boxes are 44 years old. They will remain after me.
I have painted them twice with water soluble latex.

A slight outdoor paint on the outer surface that the wood respirate moisture off.
Paint is needed that it protect the wood. Dirty and honey hands make wood otherwise bad to look.
Unprotected wood will crack in sun shine and green algae grow in moist weather.

If the paint is thick, it will rise upp with moisture.

40 years old pine hives. On backround there there are medium boxes which are made from used house floor boards. The age of wood material is perhaps 100 years now.
