Help us to encourage the government to revise their decision on the ban of direct honeybee imports and stop the honeybee decline in the UK!

Banning imports of honeybees by the government has deprived new beekeepers of a healthy lifestyle, both mentally & physically, especially since lockdown began.

20-30% winter losses are expected to have occured during the 2020/21 winter - this is a staggering 70,000 beehives
that could be lost.

Importing bees is an integral part of future beekeeping and should not need to result in the unnecessary destruction of these beautiful pollinators that are so vital in all of our lives.

When it starts with all the hysterics about honeybee decline (which there isn't) and is then followed by a load of emotive hyperbole, it quickly goes into the waste bin with all the other rubbish

And what unnecessary destruction?

My wife showed me his facebook post, not much sympathy from Joe public, main reaction was why are we importing bees. So now he is just wailing like a baby, making up all sorts of nonsense. I seem to remember quite a few championing brexit, I wonder what the view is now. The only thing these bees are integral to is his bank account.
What a fruit cake.

Don't propose to know all the ins and outs of this, just what I've been reading on the other post and in the news...
But my instant gut reaction is that the restrictions are not such a bad thing.

Honeybees are hardly endangered. A 20-30% winter loss should be able to be recovered (and more) by a decent beekeeper through increase from splits/swarm control etc. Surely a reduction in the number of bees being imported from all over the place, carrying different pests/diseases gives our already resident bees a bit more protection.
I certainly won't be jumping to sign a petition against it.

No decline in UK honeybees; quite the opposite, in fact. Decline is evident in some of the other 250-odd species of UK bee, other pollinators and the natural habitat that supports them.

Hopelessly weak argument wrapped around emotive guff.

Expected? Tabloid twaddle masquerading as factoid. PS: colonies - not beehives - might be lost, many due to inexperience or poor management. Summer splits solves storm in a tea cup.

Imports may be an integral part of the business of beekeeping, but to claim beekeeping would decline without imports is a tenuous argument. No destruction will take place and by using such emotive words as beautiful and vital and lives, BE are pulling at the heart-strings of the naive.

Fiona,
Please, as a fellow Yellowbelly, please go on the next queen rearing course and embrace the idea of a sustainable apiary. As a guess you're not a commercial beekeeper and just have a few Nationals at the bottom of the garden. Get involved in the local BBKA branch. The BBKA do not support the importation of bees.
There may not be much nature left in our part of the world given the level of industrial agriculture but what remains is worth keeping.

Hmmmmmmm......... Probably worked out from this. Note the 'experimental statistic'.

Beebase ( Beebase - Beekeeping information resource for Beekeepers ) says:

2019's count indicated a total UK population of honey bee hives of approximately 264,000. Please note that several assumptions formed part of the calculations used to get derive this number. It is therefore classed as an ‘experimental statistic’.
