In earlier times, I have heard that the primary crop was beeswax rather than honey. It strikes me that skeps, with frequent swarming, would have advantage over the later moveable frame hive for this purpose! Skeps became obsolete when other forms of wax and oil became available.

Yes beeswax was a more valuable commodity

Are you suggesting that I'm not open minded to different ideas in beekeeping ... if you are the I'd suggest you have a look back over my history of posts and demonstrate where you think I'm not open minded ? Critical of ideas that I feel are flawed ... yes ..but doesn't that come under the auspices of normal debate on a forum where personal views can be expressed ?

If you feel that we should be moderating debate more intensely well ... I'm sorry, this forum has always been light on moderation and IMO is all the better for it.

I don't know how you came to the conclusion that I have an opinion about your attitude from the posting which you quoted. Your own history of posts isn't relevant to this...I wasn't directly responding to you, but making a general observation. I'm not referring to your moderating nor asking for it to be sharpened.

If someone says they find a style of beekeeping interesting or personally favour or have found success with a particular technique, pushy and repeated requests to them for the analytics behind their preferences does not usually result in a good-tempered and reasoned debate.

I have a skep. It’s been used as a sales prop. My bait hives went up today. I might add the skep to the three Ley Line intersection site and see which one the bees prefer

If you go back to the first few pages of the thread, you'll understand very clearly why I'm reticent to share here.

I'm not here to be helpful? And further, I don't see how I could be given that I'm the new person in a forum FULL of experts.

I disagreed with the notion that early beekeepers didn't understand bee behaviour because that seems ludicrous to me and based on what I've read, they had a fairly good understanding of bees even if they weren't modern day scientists.

No, what's actually happening is that you and others think skeps are are outdated and impractical, and want the OP to make a fool of herself, (having admitted she has no experience), by trying to prove that they aren't; you must realise that she's much smarter than that. The negatives about skeps have been said; if you think there might be some positives, why don't you tell us what they may be?
