I was speaking to a very experienced microscopist last night and he mentioned the presence of two rings of magnetite in the thorax of bees. One is horizontal and one vertical which bees use to help them navigate using the Earth's magnetic field. He said there was a paper by Gould which covered this. I can find an abstract of the paper on the web http://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...serid=10&md5=bf5632129a0b59f3b952e580c06d9f73 but it costs money to download so I am wondering if anyone out there can add anything. It would of course be quite unethical to be sent a pirated copy of the paper!

Of perhaps more topical interest he said there had been research, I believe in the US, which found these rings deformed in bees and the cause could be due to pollution or pesticides. Again, anyone come across this? It would certainly explain vanishing bees.
