OP asked to be removed from the forum and has moved on.
As you say it was a non starter.
I don't understand that. If you're going to start a thread like this one at least have have a suitably thick skin to see it through *or* accept you're wrong if you realise that you are. But disappearing almost as soon as you've arrived. What's the point of it all?

A bit like a lot of the mob in my LBKA they don't think much and don'tlike it up em when you tell em so, most are entrenched in BBKA say so.

I tried to persuade him to stay and read derekm’s posts. There’s no shame in getting it wrong is there? I certainly get stuff wrong but I’ll learn from the experts.

Here today gone tomorrow mind set, some peeps don't like to hear plain truths.

We are all here to learn off each other Dani, one has to take the good with the bad, if one posts a thread or replies to one flack has to be expected sometimes if one is in the minority of thinking.
We probably all try a different take on ways of managing or bees but the insulation vs top heat loss/ venting issues is a no brainer for most.

When the weather is fine try this.....
Close the bottom of the hive with an inspection tray ( make sure all holes in the top are closed)
Take out the entrance block.
Take a couple of light feathers or two bits of tissue paper ...... anything that wafts in a drought.
Position one at each side of the side open entrance and watch what happens

PS crownboards have no holes.
Feeder boards can have one or two
You do lead an exciting life.

It's a relief to hear someone else saying that. I ignored everyone and left the boards in all winter, although checking them several times a week. Next winter I'm planning to add to the insulated jacket with a separate insulated baseboard. I'll have a removable section at the back so that I can access the inspection board.
I really think this "leave the inspection board out" mantra will go the way of matchsticks.
This is my favourite WBC. If you look closely you pull a drawer out the back, to put in a corex board. Nice and snug. Similar to your idea.

Quite a sad story, the previous owner of the WBC had died, he’d lovingly commissioned 2 WBCs, very solidly made by a good carpenter who had followed his design. His partner was selling his equipment mainly nationals, but these 2 beauties were in his shed and I refurbed them last spring. Think of him often and the pride he took with his bees, now mine are enjoying them too.

I use the term offendatrons 😎

Some people are more sensitive than others. That’s the way it is and I’m sure we all try to be gentle with beginners. However, it’s quite another thing to put up a deliberately confrontational post and not expect to be challenged

I specialise in giving offence with a smile.... people who know me know I mean it.
People who don't know me think I am joking.

I receive abuse in the same way - when I smile I am offended.:devilish:

I am afraid people who go through life taking offence, end up sadder than they are now.

Very smart refurb, they look great.
The late owner would know doubt have been very happy that one day someone else will have put them to good use again.

That is the very best possible outcome; from what I have read of your love of bees; the original owner would be very happy to have you take ownership. He obviously had a great mind, just like me ;) . I'll definitely go ahead with my plan A. :)

Sad to say I do think this forum has taken a turn for the worse when it comes to censorship this past couple of months. Admittedly my principle way of access is reviewing the daily email of updates rather than seeing which section each post has been made in but if anyone is put off by any of the content in any of the posts I've been interested enough to read I think I'd rather take the Groucho Marx approach of "I'd never join a club that would have me as a member".

Batch to the current post I must admit to being slightly confused by those who leave an inspection tray/board in all the time. I thought the purpose of an open mesh floor was that varroa could (do?) fall through it and don't make their way back into the hive. Surely leaving an inspection tray in negates that so why not just use solid floors?

Where did you get that idea ?

There's no censorship on here unless it's abusive behaviour or profanity ... certainly I've never seen a post deleted on the basis of its beekeeping content ... challenged - Yes - deleted - No.

Many people do. Where I live a fully open OMF equates to leaving a house window open most of the time, that is cold air, draughts and often a modest gale blowing in. With the inspection tray "in" there is still a place for varroa to drop through and, dare I say it enough air leakage to be called ventilation.

That's a real shame because all of us mods strive to keep this place as democratic and safe as possible while still alive and kicking. We don't remove content unless its confrontational on a personal basis, legally unsafe or just plain rude. I think you are wrong

Most varroa that fall through the OMF are dead. Have you ever seen varroa move? they are pretty fast and I would hazard that any loose ones in the colony fairly soon drop on to a neighbouring bee. For one varroa to fall from a bee and not encounter another before it hits the mesh must be rare.
Some are damaged and unable to crawl much anyway.
My inspection trays are a couple of inches below the floor and enable me to keep an eye on what's happening up top without actually looking in.

Nonsense - seen very little in the way of 'censorship' here - apart from the odd vile post which shouldn't have existed in the first place

No - another myth, OMF has little to do with varroa control (apart from being a very inefficient way of monitoring mite levels) it's all to do with air circulation and temperature balance.
The varroa control myth was just propagated to encourage beekeepers to try OMF as there was a reluctance amongst beekeepers to try it. (are you surprised at beekeepers being reluctant to try something new?!)
