Late Split

When is too late to do a Split and have a reasonable chance of both colonies making it through the winter?

If you're buying in a second queen you've got a few weeks more yet.
If your new one is a grow your own it's dependant on how many drones are still left and how good she will be when she's matated as she has her work cut out getting the winter prep done

i have made a few and am bothered about wasps and robbing

if you give enough stores and some brood, there aren't necessarily the guards to protect?

Blimey I got slated for a similar post not too long ago when I said there was no problem to split and everyone was screaming one strong hive is better than two weak ones and there is not enough time left for them to build up!!! Huh!

big difference between splitting a hive and leaving it in the lap of the gods for the queen to get mated, start laying and the colony to then build up - and introducing a mated queen to a made up nuc

on one nuc i gave 2.5 BIAS....and the rest stores and the stores has gone (i fear robbed) but q is there and laying up...may add another frame of BIAS
