Large bee, any ideas on ID?

Any ideas what the attached might be??

Looks more like a large bee than anything else, abdomen looked like smooth fur with a rounded bottom

Quite large, bigger than a bumblebee and bigger than the blackberries as shown in the pic.

I had a European hornet starting to nest in an empty nuc this year. After relocating some distance from the apiary I saw one of these, which is a hornet mimic hover fly. Not having seen either before I thought it was a remarkable coincidence that the hoverfly is in the same location as the real thing.
 
And of course 2 wings, as flies have, rather than 4 wings, as bees, wasps and hornets have.
