Hi all,

Is it possible to have a separate label on the underside of the jar with the best before and lot number on it? If so, do you need to indicate on the main label where this information can be found?

Thanks

I have large pretty label on the back of the jar...this is the side that shows on display.
On the front I have all the legal stuff printed on a cheap custom return address label from Vistaprint

Bac k and front labels are no problem (you can have the 'legal' stuff on the back Dani - as long as it's all in one 'field of vision') if you want to put a Best before date on the base, no problem as long as you indicate that on your main legal requirement label. You don't even need a separate batch number as long as you use a DD/MM/YY format on the BB label not 'end of YY' and keep a record of that.

I use front and back labels, with all the required stuff on the back. I put batch number and best before on a little sticker that goes in between the two, on the side of the jar.

Put the batch and best before on the anti tamper label***... must be water proof ink.
*** Cornwall Trading Standards now insist on this! ( the anti tamper that is!)

Amazes me how many labels are still incorrect in so many ways!
AND how some must be taking a flogging to nowhere by selling the stuff so cheap... perhaps they have no pride in the product ... or have a total lack of accountancy in their business.

Thanks all. Much clearer now especially the front label that's the back label ;-)

there is nothing in the regulations to say that the legal bits must be on the front of the jar (they're not on supermarket labels are they?) all it says is that those things must all be in the one field of vision - i.e. you can't have the weight on the front and the address on the back. so if everything is either on the back or the front, no matter.

I'm looking at a BBKA leaflet (2011 I think) that says "For direct sales like farmers markets or sales at the door lot numbers and ‘Best before’ dates are not needed". Is that now (since 2015?) incorrect and therefore must have either (a) both or (b) best before that includes a day of month

?

Thanks

why risk the hassle?
Cussedness, I suppose :toetap05:

Since there is no agreed "loss of bestness" period for honey, it becomes a fatuous action - and actually undermines the validity of best before dates on products that really need it

I was seriously advised this week to put 1 year ahead, because that way people will throw it away and buy more honey :hairpull:

I'm still tempted to get a batch of labels made with 'Best Before:The end of the world' :D

Thornes print labels with individual consecutive numbers as lot information. They also suggested about five years best before so you can use the labels up before it's critical

I don't use off the shelf labels, we have our own design, but yes, I do tend to put a BB date four or five years on

Saw honey for sale in supermarket from littleover apiaries. No address, just an email.

Can we get away with that?

Forget that. I've just put littleover apiaries into Google and it gives the address.

If a customer chooses and buys liquid (runny) honey as that is what they prefer and it starts to granulate then surely it must be past its "best".
