They have been fine all year. Just went frumpy around the time the super was removed.
They are due some 2:1 at the end of October. Is it advisable to feed whilst caroa treatment is ongoing?

Can you feed 2:1 that late in Lancs?
 
Depends on weather. Usually manage until mid/end October and then switch to fondant. Still quite mild here.

Did you give them a quick feed when you took the super or did they heft very full? Queens will be laying now and plenty of mouths to feed means stores being used, a bit low on stores can cause some stress.

2:1 or fondant?
Well you said there were really lots of bees so syrup should be OK. I use 2 litre rapids (the circular ones) with warm syrup which is taken down overnight. That way there isn't a mass of cold syrup sitting above the nest.
With five frames to fill you're going to need around 8/9 litres
