I am trying to decide whether to take off the super or not on a strong, productive hive, which is filling the outer frames on the brood box with honey. I always keep fondant on throughout winter. Thanks.

I overwinter some hives on single national, some on single commercial. Makes no real difference to my bees.

Your main problem is in the spring when you try and take the super off. You will probably have brood in it. There are ways but why make hassle for yourself. Keep it simple. One brood box should be plenty and fondant on standby for a long wet winter!

I put some insulation over the crown board for winter and they were strong come spring

If the box is not big enough for winter, use 2 boxes. This is normal way to handle the problem. 2 langstroths or 3 mediums.
