Just a heads up from a nerd, Please be aware that when you post a digital photo (JPEG), of for example your hives you can be giving away their EXACT LOCATION !

The photo could contain the EXACT GPS location of where the photo was taken, if you are using a GPS enabled smartphone, digital camera or video camera.
Most modern digital devices ARE GPS Enabled by default !

Your digital photo's contain what is known as EXIF DATA here is more info
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format

Some FREE software to view EXIF DATA here
http://www.exifdataviewer.com/

And some FREE software to remove EXIF DATA from your photos
http://www.easyexifdelete.com/

This might stop some people losing their hives, hope this info is of some help

Sipa.

Happily not something we need be too concerned about here....

...not that the French aren't thieves and crooks, they just don't steal hives apart from on very, very rare occasions perhaps the odd one here and there or near Italy and Spain.

Also applicable if you post pictures of where your children go to school and other items if you want to remain private you can turn off location services on most smart phones!

Thanks for heads up. Just turned locations services off.
Not that I have much to nick!

Wow, thats a bit scary. I posted pics a few days ago taken by my 2-year old bridge camera. No mention of GPS in the handbook, nor "Get Info' on my Mac. Thanks Sipa.

So G C H Q know where I'm taking my pickies then??

One way to check on a Mac is open the picture in iPhoto then if there is Geo information embedded it should show in the Info Side panel in Places box.

That's just one of the privacy issues with phones. Many people don't bother to read the privacy statement when they download an App for their Android phone. Lots of Android Apps access the contacts in your phone and the company may use that info as they please.

A lot of photo hosting sites do give the option to remove meta data from the photos hosted on them which is also something to bear in mind.

use Airpush opt out app (to stop ads being sent to you!)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.airpush.opt.out.androidapp

AppBrain App

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps

use both of the above for free, what you also need to remember is when Apps get Updated then can often change, AppBrain App tells you want all applications have access to on installation and update!!!, and whether they also use the PushSDK, which Pushes Ads to your phone!

This c**p does not happen on Apple iOS and the AppStore, because of "Apple Quality" controls, rejecting apps getting on the AppStore!

Just sidestepping slightly.

Re privacy.
Last year I bought a smart phone.
I linked it to google email and Facebook etc etc.

Configured it to do something else.
Backed up the contacts to PC.
Deleted what was on the sim card and then uploaded info from PC to phone.

I then see that on the phone I have email address of people I had previousy not had email addresses for, and all their phone numbers. These seemed to be friends of and friends of friends. How was it that I was able to get somebody's email address and phone number from Facebook? They dont show them publically. and we wonder where people get our details from to send us emails and phone us about loft insulation.
