I have read that you have in UK a big dead rate during winter.
Why we do not have and our climate is very harsh. - Our climate gives not choices what to do for wintering. It is allmost one formula.

I don't know what I am talking about - but I know a man who does:-

"Rain is the principle feature of the weather here- rain and fog. From 1st November to 1st March, except during an occasional spell of dry frosty weather, nothing dries up, and the bee-keeper's problem is to keep the hive dry, not warm"

Honeycomb maltesers, milky way,you maybe onto something hivemaker.

Anyway I thought the future was the Dartington hive?

and the bee-keeper's problem is to keep the hive dry, not warm"

Marvellous alternatives.

I keep warm and dry. Warm keeps hive dry. You know, relative moisture.

Bees generate heat. They generate moisture too like human via breathing.
Many seems to ventilate more his hives than his own house.
