I have been feeding my smaller colony and they are taking the syrup very quickly, is this normal? 2 litres taken in 3 days

I usually give them 2 litres per week
If you are autumn feeding you need to bang in what they need for winter as quickly as you can. That way they store it rather than turn it into brood. Drip feeding will encourage the bees to make more bees

Isn’t there an argument that you want them to make more bees - the “winter” bees - so as to assure a good sized cluster?

You want them to take it down and evaporate the water off, store and cap it while they can. They will sort the bees out as long as there is some room left! That is my predicament at the moment. They are bringing in nectar and are already very heavy. Don't want to take any more honey off but I am hoping there is enough room!
