The crownboard is stuck down.

You move it and bees rapidly appear.

The frame feeder is empty.

Bees are right across the frames.

There is fresh white wax.

And not a frame moved.

Alternatively ( and I know it's love em or hate em) use a glass quilt and you don't even have to take the crownboard off.)

you can smell a good hive from the entrance

I like that reply MBC,I agree you can tell by smell and also noise.

The hum that a colony makes when they have built up.

Mine must bee mute bees because I don't hear a thing.

Funny I can smell a nice fresh "bee aroma" from the hive and also if you listen on the side of the hive you can hear them buzzing quite loudly.

You can buy a stethoscope on Ebay for a couple of pounds, and listen to the side of the brood box. This is good for cold weather too. No need to take off the roof. No heartbeat, just a satisfying hum.

Well, TURN YOUR HEARING AID ON!!
