Today carried out weekly inspection. Hive had brood and a half plus one super. Last Friday all looked good. Today there were charged queen cells everywhere. Several on many frames. Possibly as many as 30 in the hive. Why so many?
 
Because they can't count. Just leave one that you can see has royal jelly in

More to the point did you find the queen or did you see eggs?
 
Usually that is the result of tearing down QC?

Queen gone or not? sometimes after the swarm leaves the remaining workers go into panic mode and makq EQCs out of anything

Thanks, sounds right; panic after lost queen. Couldn't find queen. Very large number of bees so didn't suspect swarm. Plenty of sealed brood. Made use of bait hives, cut down to two good cells per hive and added extra space. Fingers crossed.

unless you open the hive immediately after the swarm leaves, within a few hours still emerging brood and stragglers from the swarm returning combined with hardly any foragers away means the box looks full again
