A real and very serious "Cat and Mouse" scenario being played by the suppliers, dealers, packers against the testing labs.
Once within the EU the pseudo-honey has a passport to be moved and sold without a problem.
Readers might also be interested to learn that honey packed in one EU country is NOT allowed to be tested in the receiving country.
Of course as the majority of members of this forum are not professional beekeepers, the imported item does not affect them. But, in small economies, for example Cyprus or Malta, it only takes a couple of container loads to severly depress prices.
Imported honey being sold here in Cyprus at €3,20 a kilo, includesVAT.

This project is essentially a producer funded effort originatiing in South America (for which you can largely read Argentina) as part of their campaign to resist the swamping of their export markets (esp UK and EU) with Chinese 'product'.

Should we be worrying about it? We are premium producers and the honey market is like a graduated stick.....our entire market is restricted to the purchasers in the 10% at the top. The Chinese trade is in the huge section at the bottom, of people who would not buy our honey anyway.

Yes Roger etc...the honey market is in a lot of difficulty...though it would have been even more treacherous a year back when many European producers were being hit with the double whammy of collapsed market (mostly due to overstock) and failed harvests. The markets are slightly recovered but crops have not.

Those suggesting that UK honey prices are in crisis would do well to remember that, although a *little* off top this year, they have for the last couple of years been in an unsustainable spike. The same honey flora wise in Pas de Calais should not be half the price it is in Kent (or vica versa). Costs, production, and quality broadly similar. A correction one way or the other will come.

The whole agriculture and horticulture sector of the UK are going to be in a total state of disarray as we leave the EU without any "deal".
I just hope we do not spin downwards into the same turmoil as happened in 1922 with "farming" and food production at its lowest ebb, mass unemployment and a world wide recession.

I for one could not afford to "give away" my honey in bulk to the large packers, fortunately like most Beefarmers we are a small enough outfit to be able to adjust to market trends and package and sell our own high quality product locally.

If only the "hobby" honey producers would realise that they do not need to compete on price with the supermarkets, who it has to be said buy cheap and stack it high!!

If anyone is looking for badly paid backbreaking work, there is plenty down here in Cornwall with the daffodil growers saying they will go out of business if they can not bring in the E European pickers next year.

This is the heart of the matter and whether you have 4 or 4k colonies we're all in the same boat. Trouble is that too many hobby beekeepers give away their honey at Tesco prices and don't get (or don't care) that they're rowing in the opposite direction to the rest of us.
