Did a quick heft of the boxes yesterday and all are nice and heavy still.

Which leads on to what to do if the boxes are stores bound in spring.

Personally I use the hive tool to bruise cappings and get the bees to use it up.

Others carefully remove them and put them aside for nucs and so on.

I prefer to feed my nucs with syrup though so not an issue for me.

Others do what?

You mean, what to do with extra winter food?

I even capped frames along spring between hives - I do not feed them more.
It must be allways 5 kg food in each hive for bad weeks.

1) When yield begans I put sugar frames in the middle of brood area and they consume sugar away.
2) Turning brood stores makes too that upper stores goes in the middle of brood area and they consume stores.
