John has said it all pretty much, except that the best place to go is your local beekeeping association which you can find through the BBKA website if you're not a member already.

Hi and from Okehampton.
I think you've missed this years 'basic course' but if you join the DBKA and attend some apiary meetings you can can get up close and personal with bees before spending pennies,see a variety of hive types and meet a lot of nice helpful people.
