If we were on BST all year round, it would mean it was pitch black until after 9am in the winter.
That was tried in the late 60's. We all had to wear reflective orange jackets to go to school. The next year reverted to GMT.

But why can't we just stick to GMT all year?

How does that work? Changing the clocks by an hour makes no difference to the number of daylight hours.
I should have said factories not farmers During WW1 the Germans had already done it and we followed suit. The lighter evenings (at the nominal end of day) meant working hours could be extended without workers going home in the dark. Of course, farmers don't care what the clock says, they just work when they can.

wouldnt have made much differance to me in winter go to work in dark, come home in dark not fun.

btw farmers do say what the clock says, and in winter most of them bugger off sking anyway
