Gall wasp?

Not sure, but my question is the same! Took this in Oxford. I saw a near identical one in Gwynedd a couple of years ago.
 
(google just answered me, it's a dog rose gall)
 
@ VM - I don't think that's caused by gall wasps, it's much too big. It looks like a burr, which is an abnormal growth.
 
It is big about three quarters the size of a football!

That's right. They keep on growing. Some burr woods are quite valuable to the furniture trade, walnut especially.
 
Oak gall - lots of these here this year.
