can DN4 frames be used in a 14x12 box?

Thanks for your help

yes, the top bars are the same length but the side bars won't reach to the bottom of the box so you will get them building brace comb to extend the frames downwards

This should answer your question http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/bsframedimensions.html .

Short answer : Yes. DN4 are self spacing.

Ahhhhh, so the DN4's are Hoffman 14x12's!

Thank goodness for that. I've been using DN4's and even ordered some more as they're great but then I noticed 14x12's advertised and thought "awh naw". Cheers Murox, started panicking that I would go out to the hive in April and find all the frames glued to the floor with comb. Phew.

No - DN4's are Deep National frames with Hoffman side bars.
14x12's are Jumbo National frames with Hoffman side bars

National deeps are 14x81/2
Naional Jumbo are 14x12

And I thought Jumbo was a little elephant... did wonder why they had big ears?

Thornes catalogue has very good explanation with sizes and description of all the various frame types. I found it very useful when I first started, as it is confusing.

Mmmm, thanks as ever for your help but im vexed. My '14x12' frames as i thought they were came from thornes marked DN4. I'm home now and have measured them and looked at others in my pre made-up spare jumbo box for next year. They reach the bottom of the box and the side bar is 12 inches. They worked well in my first hive since July and never noticed an issue whatsoever. No comb on the bottom (how could there be as they fit). I Could it be they are simply incorrectly labelled? I know what deeps are as the association uses them and my nuc came with them had to 'work' them out which i did with 4 of them. Bizarre.

Much confusion about frame sizes - always has been and with such odd terminology.
DN4's are standard National brood frames with self spacing Hoffman side bar. (14” x 8 1/2”) 356 mm x 216 mm. Most brood frames are the DN4 and the DN5. Both have Hoffman side bars. The DN5 has a wider and stronger top bar than the DN4.

14x12's (or Jumbo) (or Deep National) frames can also have self spacing Hoffman side bar. (14” x 12”) 356 mm x 305 mm
( I have seen 14x12 DN4's advertised around as well)

A standard National deep brood frame with Hoffman self spacing bar (DN4) should fit into a 14x12 brood body but with a substantial gap below the frames. The gap below the frames may or may not be an issue. You can modify the standard National hive brood box with a home made 90mm eke to allow the use of 14” x 12” frames in the brood chamber.

Then that must be the answer Murox. Thank you for your reply. Appreciated.
