My two hives survived the winter....a bit of a flip...the stronger one going into winter appears much smaller (May Swarm)...and the weaker one (Summer swarm) has come out very strong.
Interestingly I did two different verroa treatments. The current stronger one had api life var and the weaker had MAQS. Not that that could be the reason....but there is very little mite drop on the api life var one and more on the the other with signs of deformed wings....
Anyhow - the weaker hives has some frames at the far end which contain crystallised honey - they were pulling in lots of ivy late last year with the warm weather and the abundance of it near by so i assume it is that. That is in the central ark, around it I have some sealed new honey, and some unsealed nectar. See pics - upside down sorry!)
The question is do i just replace these frames with new (being new my new are all undrawn), do i cut the set out (wired foundation so not easy) and put it back so as not to waste their effort fully or do I leave in. This was the last but one from away from there brood, the last one is similar but with less new stores.
My other hive which is stronger has no crystallised honey in it and all looks good and strong and drawing out and filling a super which is great as I may get my first crop!
Thanks in advance for any wisdom from those with experience.....
