Has anyone done it on here. If so can you post a couple of pics. I have priced this via the usual retailers and have found somewhere to supply motors at a very reasonable price. I have at the moment a 4 frame tangential. Is it worth fitting a motor to this or should i try and pick up something bigger. I have 3 hives at the moment but am looking to expand again.

Here's a couple of pics of a cheap/free way of motorising an extractor :)

John

What size motor did you use? What sort of controller is it?
Thanks for the pics

The controller is a simple thyristor control a (as you can see it's a fan controller), motor size , it's a fractional horse power ,single phase job 1/4 horse if I remember rightly :), I'll check and get back to you

What final rpm does an extractor need to turn at?

my old electric drill powered spinner was running at about 80 rpm, the norm for speed is between 50 to 150 rpm comb will not go over that unless it is plastic, you are in a perfect world to start slowly to remove the weight of the majority then faster to remove to last start to quick and the lot will be stuck to the sides including the frame, the super posh ones do start slowly build up speed and then slow down which is normaly over a 3 to 4 minute period. the faster it goes to quicker it comes out , to a point when it all goes wrong

Pete your post made me laugh,I can just picture it happening.

Interestingly, a windscreen wiper motor (Vauxhaull Astra - £15 at a scrapyard) runs at around 65 rpm at 12V. With a very slight gearing up this might be an option worth investigating. Lower voltages will reduce the speed.

Has anyone tried this?

No Admin, the frames won't swish back and forward - on a good day anyway :)

Anyone doubting the general capability of said windscreen wiper motors should have a quick look at the website of VK5ZAI to see the loads being rotated. Geared down to approx 1 rpm, which is why I am slightly uncertain about the capability for extractor use. Impressive.

Web reference is good now - sorry for the original error. I must have forgotten to copy before pasting.

Hombre the link you posted goes to easybees website?

Hombre I removed the link for you,can you re-do it to the correct url ?

Thanks Admin and Veg, sorry about the incorrect URL. the correct one is now back in my original post. Give the site a quick once over and you will appreciate the power of windscreen wiper motors. VK5ZAI Anthony Huchinson is NASA's guy in the southern hemisphere when they need a bit of extra space shuttle comms in a pinch. The reflector on his 5m long antennas is 2m by 4m chicken wire(?) framed with 1 inch steel water pipe. Go figure the forces involved. He remarked that on startup the short tower used to flex and so he had to brace it accordingly.

If they can stir up the space shuttle and NASA, they have to have enough in them to spin honey frames for us terrestrial bee keeping types.

I have further improved the URL of my original reference to go direct to the page referenced.

motor for my extractor

Hi, can anyone please give me an address for a supplier for suitable replacement motor, which has just given up on me!!,..Help

If you have any motor repair specialists nearby, that might be much cheaper than £350ish for a new one ...

Contact Parvalux they do extractor motors.
