While watching my hive today I've noticed a behaviour I haven't seen before which involved workers riding piggyback on drones in a way which makes me think the drones are being evicted. The worker was clearly harassing the drone and in some cases appearing to drag the drones away from the hive entrance - is this typical of how they are dispensed of?

Dragged out kicking and screaming and not allowed back in, perfectly normal in drone eviction

Bee bye boys. Same has happened to one of our hives, but not the other

I saw similar behaviour at the entrance to one of my hives.

Drones being escorted of the premises. The Gigalos Summers Party has ended.

One stood on his own, forlornly & bemused as he looked back at the hive entrance. Well thats how he looked to me :)

Why do female beeks tend to support this topic with gusto!

I think drones should be left exist all year.

I read somewhere that in spite of their only function being to inseminate the queen they improve the mood of the colony. A female beek may well believe this could be the case in those early days of youth but when they're all getting on a bit drone lethargy could be a bit irksome!bee-smillie

As a beginner seeing the drones being kicked out it quite traumatic when first seen but I'll get over it. Interesting behaviour.

I propose establishing a charity called SPUD:

Society for the Protection of Unloved Drones.

Drones with No Fixed Abode will be offered winter shelter in special nucs, fully furnished with drawn drone comb throughout, nice warm solid floors, ambrosia and mead available on all frames.........

Comforting queen pheromones to be circulated constantly, and on the audio system, the gentle hum of a contented hive.

Virgin queens will be available early next season.
