One of my fathers hives has completely filled the entrance gap to the hive with propolis / wax with about 16 small holes for the bees to pass through. Effectively they have made their own entrance block. Has anyone seem this sort of behavior before?

Carniolans are past masters at this !

I collected a cast in June and put them in a nuc with a 1" hole. They reduced it to a single bee sized hole, but they have made it slightly bigger recently.
Praps the cast is Carniolans.

I very much doubt that they will be carniolans. One of their notable characteristics is that they have a much lower propensity for propolising everything in sight than do other types. If there are carniolan characteristics in them they are in all probablitiy crosses.

Just as a thought, is there a simple reason for this like the dony't like te top ventilation and cannot close the top off?
