I know that bees do what bees do but do they know why?

2 hives in garden next to each other. For the last month whenever the temperature has been above 10 or so, one hive has been active and and chucking out drones by the dozen..
Obviously they had too many drones for one reason or another and some of the activity was in sorting that problem out.
Today they were out at 9.00 walking over the front of the hive and generally behaving as if they were new bees, but so far today no dead drones...
Other hive has had a few bees out but not what I would call busy.

Now, is one hive being extra busy or is the other hive not being as busy as it should be?

Neither.

they are getting themselves organised as they want to be. Just because one appears better at getting ready than the other casts no aspersions on either. Drones have other uses than merely sexual. And no... I will not expand. Google is your friend.

Just let them alone to sort themselves out, provided they are well fed and protected from vermin.
