Got a call this week to deal with two Bumble bee nests. One belonged to a neighbour in his compost bin the other in a blue tit box.
So, having confirmed the check list questions similar to pre-flight checks and established it bumble bees i arranged time/day and fees.
When i arrived at the first house blue tit box no problem all boxed in and removed.
Round the corner to the neighbour and was shown by the nice homeowner to the lovely rear garden. "Down here they are. I was painting the shed the other day they are really nice to watch." Strange i thought but oh well.
Got to the far corner to find that the compost bin had a lovely colony in it!
"How long have they been here?"....Reply.."Ohhh let me think ummm 2 years"
They swarmed last year bank holiday monday according to the nice homeowner.
So, plan of action to reduce the compost bin to half it size. Permission to chop accordingly and use of jigsaw. Reduced bin to half the size and replaced back in original position.
Later that day with help of widders and new beek all safely moved to car and transported home.
Today we have managed to take some pics and decide on the next plan of action to get them into a TBH. Lovely colony nice temper and seem to be doing o.k.
