Clematis problem

My Clematis Montana died sometime in the spring. I hadn’t got round to removing it until today. When I did this afternoon, the smell was disgusting, like rotting flesh. It was oozing yuk. I haven’t seen anything like this before. Any idea what may have happened?

Think it may be Clematis Slime Flux It is caused by a bacterial infection
