Studies in the UK and France looking at Bumbles (UK) and Honeybee (France).
In UK study looked at Imidacloprid and bumble bees; colonies 12% lighter suggesting less food coming in and produced 85% fewer queens. 13 queens in untreated compared with 1.5 to 2 for treated colonies.
In France, Thiamethoxam sub-lethal dose given to honeybees. Bees more than three times more likely to die while away from hive. Possibly as pesticide interferes with homing systems. Population studies suggest hive never recover.
DEFRA says they’ll look at any new research – but claim all pesticides used pose no threat to honeybees if used ‘correctly’.
Ministry ‘institutionally resistant’ to new findings – according to Jon Snow! Call for government to fund full field trials.
