I have been surfing the web and stumbled across poly hives. I didn't know how cheap they are compared to wood, Why?
I have looked at the longstroth poly and i think they are about £86 and you can get parts that means you can put BS nucs frames in them.
I still like the idea of making my own frames, but hives at that price i would be better buying than making .
But i haven't found many sites selling them so if you now any please tell.

whats his website please

Thanks Darren
But thats the only one i have seen them on .
But they look pretty good :)

Forgivr Ian but i don't understand the price list. What would a longstroth B and 2 S cost?

I can highly recommend Swienty top gear and service :)

Duh i didn't see the uk flag in the corner.
But i think they are more costly than modernbeekeeping and i dread to think what the Euro rate is. But thanks for the link i will work it out.

Hi Wightbees

Yes it is confusing, condensed itself when cut and paste.

I read it as..

Lang brood £21.40 inc
supers £17.49 inc

So thats retail rate and 4th price in line inc

As to the Euro rate you will be paying that one way or the other as they are all supplied from/manufactured inte Euro zone

Regards Ian

It hasnt been that long since I took the plunge into tranferring my bees into poly hives and I havent looked back since. I always use Modern Beekeeing to source them. The hives and accessories they sell are superb, service is second to none and they are always helpful and willing to give advice. What else can you ask for?

A large discount for giving them a hefty plug?:svengo:

A bit of warmth so I can move the (now painted and full of frames) hive out of the living room and get some bees in it?

the penny's has dropped back in my pocket lol
The cost of making one at the moment outways a days wage lol
But when the evenings are lighter and the weekend weather is better i will make some .

Where is your spirit of adventure, just taking a poly hive off the shelf,

Either make it yourself with scrap wood/ply recovered from skips
,
or

buy a Thornes Bees on a Budget (they are second quality) Cedar National on line...BS national Brood, OMF floor, roof, two supers 20 sn1 frames , 11 Dn1 frames , foundationand Queen excld for £125 delivered

you'll understand all about bees space etc making it ( and how to treat knots in wood if you take the second option :):))

Then move on to poly if you wish to...i have just bought some poly hive (and a 14x12 poly nuc PH doesn't like) and it good, nice to use, easy, warm but not so exciting as making your first hive from wood

DUCKING fast as large lumps Extra Dense Poly(1-phenylethane-1,2-diyl)) with a degrading half life of 2500 years get chucked at me

I bought a load of langstroth supers from Swienty about 2 weeks ago and they were about £13 each taking into account delivery charges and tax.

As it happens i was going through the plans this afternoon to make a longstroth.
Then i followed a link and it took me straight to a poly at 86.50 which was alot cheaper than the wooden ones i have seen . I do want to make some hives and the plan was to get out this weekend and make a start. But the weather is all over the place . Shed is filled with DIY stuff from doing the house up so it's a open air job and the weather is just not up to it.
And And And the poly ones look nice :)
The frames you so kindly sent me, there are two set of spacers there. I take it you don't use them on the H or M frames. Also do the M frames self space like the H frames ?
The frames also have what looks like a bit of wood thats not quiet sawn out properly, is it ment to come out of the top bar. so that the wax fits behind it then put it back again ?
Many thanks
