Oh No!
This is what I was dreading..... I'm going to have to see this for myself..... (Huge sigh,,,,)
Guard bees "fly hopping" around...... This I have to see....

Best time to test is when we have quests I imagine,,,,, yep! when I'm full of "Prune Juice" and as Brave as ????? - Update to follow.

Don't forget to leave it until dark.(y) sarcasm!!
You could get one of your guests to put a head torch on,if your not very fond of them.
I didnt know how else to explain what happens " fly hoping" :sorry:

My son says to me today, dad, Best reschedule the trap outs until next week, we have another cold front hitting on Sunday... Low of 18 deg C...
I dont think we know what cold is.....
When I was at my cousin's in Joburg, April/May 2014 we were invited to a braai - there was me sat there in my lightweight trtousers and sort sleeved shirt - everyone else in puffa jackets! :icon_204-2:

Generally my three hives and very friendly and placid until I mow the lawn. I'm getting a bit fed up of being stung.

What are they like when you carry out a routine check, Iain? Still calm? On the allotment I've got a 5hp Hayter 21 paddock mower (a gloriously noisy beast) and run it right past the entrances and round the hives without bother. Maybe it's the frequency of your engine? The Hayter is deep, like a tank, quite unlike a modern lawnmower.

Very explanatory,
"Fly Hopping" when intoxicated honey bees attach at night using both wings and ALL wheel drive to apprehend intruders - "Fly Hopping"
This should be added to the Oxford Thingy Ma Jig....

Makes me think of some of my late night quests when they relieve themselves on the electric fence, they always insist the wire touched there arm or shoulder...
But I know better..... They also "Fly Hop" around along with some choice words..

In the late afternoon, a fine mist of ordinary water will generally send any bees at the entrance back into the hive. Then blocking up by nailing with aluminium mesh (free at glass fitting shop) sees them securely in the hive and with some ventilation. Having said that however, I just mow and strim around my home hives with a bee suit on...but I do use all battery operated cutting equipment however.

Your a character Michael you'll fit in tidy here;).

If it is really hot ( 20c is tropical up here) Mr Speybee mows in full beekeeping gear, without blocking them
Can't get mine into spare beesuit at any cost despite the fact that he gets stung when they ignore me. Have to do the lawn and gardening myself during the season. Wear a veil, because the flight paths are across the lawns and they could end up in my hair. Novelty of being stung has worn off by now!

I do a great deal of the gardening and pruning the soft fruit bushes and the sowing and planting, harvesting the large veggie patch, ( over 50kg berries this season) but the ride on mower is Mr Speybee’s preserve ever since I reversed my wee car into a bollard.
God forbid I touch that mower! ( suits me anyway as I’d rather watch paint dry)
I am similar position to you, flight path across the lawn, but don’t under estimate the frequency of stings.....the next one could be near fatal
( anaphylaxis and I don’t mean a thick lip)
