If you belong to an association have a chat with the members and ask them what hives they run. I went with Nationals when I started because it was the popular choice.

Nationals are considered by many bee keepers a good hive but a little small for prolific queens, so I've either bought the eke to convert them into Deep Nationals or I've given them a super to make them into brood and half.

If your brother in law is handy at woodwork its easier to do a little research now then modify at a later date.
