They look to have about 8" of wood around them.
 
Anyone on the forum involved ?
Looked like an interesting situation it will be great to hear the outcome.
 
Judging from the last picture I doubt if they have been in continuous occupation, more likely varroa - die out - re-occupy over and over again. Hope they can be saved though.

How can you tell?
 
I'd hate to try to find the queen in that lot. I have trouble with a marked queen in a national brood box.
 
If there was no queen, or she was killed in the storm, why are there no queen cells?
