It gives an idea how complex the tongue of bees are. The flexible bit which is darting around collecting the syrup is the glossa, which is supported either side by the rigid galea. The glossa is what they insert into flowers.

There are other bits to the tongue as well - they are not at all like our tongues.

If you scan down a page or two from this link to page 66 there is a drawing. Honey bees are like the one on the right I think.
