Whilst walking today on holiday in Tuscany, came across this apiary on a forest track. Interestingly, all the entrances had mose guards - is this standard european practice?

I would think they are not to keep mice out. Perhaps just the way they reduce hive entrance down.

Dadant-Blatt hives if anyone is wondering.

Close up, the entrance strips are very similar to mouse guards you can buy from Thornes

16 a mix of Commercial, National, 14 x 12, Dadant and a Warre
They may well be the 5mm Asian hornet guards that are now available, they don't stop the attacks but at least stop the beasties getting into the hive.:willy_nilly:

That sends a shiver down the spine of many uk beekeepers..

Whats the grill size of a queen excluder ?
